Imogen Matthews Discusses Her Next Book in YouTube Interview

Kamp Amersfoort: Inspiration for Imogen Matthews’ Forthcoming Novel

This week, I had a long-awaited catch up with my publisher, Liesbeth Heenk, founder owner of Amsterdam Publishers to discuss my next book which I’ve been writing during Lockdown. We were due to have this interview at London Book Fair in March, which was cancelled as the Covid-19 virus was reaching pandemic proportions.

Zoom came to the rescue! All in all, the interview probably worked better than trying to find a quiet corner at London Book Fair - an impossibility at the best of times!

Liesbeth and I have been working together for over three years and she’s published the first two books in the Untold WW2 Stories series: The HIdden Village and Hidden in the Shadows.

In this interview, I tell Liesbeth about the latest inspiration for another wartime story set in German occupied Holland. Like the first two books, it is based on a real place and story that very few people have heard about in the Netherlands, let alone elsewhere.

Kamp Amersfoort was a Dutch concentration holding around 37,000 prisoners between 1941 and 1945 - many were executed by firing squad. After the war, the camp was completely dismantled and for decades its gruesome history lay forgotten.

Then, in 2004, a memorial was built on the site of the original camp and today people can visit the National Monument Kamp Amersfoort Foundation to discover, learn and reflect on the events that happened and lives that were lost.

A young boy and his father were given permission to go into the camp every day - discover why in Imogen’s interview.
